I was wrong–FWC to open snook on the East Coast!

I was wrong. It looks like the FWC will reopen snook on the East Coast of Florida on September 17th. The rest of the state will remain catch and release only.

Atlantic snook harvest season to reopen soon; other areas stay

catch-and-release

I have to say this is a pleasant surprise. After the harsh winter we had and the subsequent fish kills, many anglers (myself included) assumed that the harvest of snook would not resume until next year. With the fall mullet run on the verge of going into full swing, I am excited to get out and bend a rod. Keep an eye out for new pictures and videos coming soon.

Snook to remain closed!

I’m not surprised that the FWC has added to the closure of snook season.

On September 2nd, there will be a meeting to discuss the rest of the year regarding the harvesting of snook.

Take a look at the whole press release fro FWC here:

What a weekend on the beach.

We filmed this last Saturday and Sunday on the beach in Fort Pierce, Fl. It really doesn’t get too much better than this-calm, clear and warm. Saturday was the Surfrider Foundation Beach Clean up at Pepper Park. We spent a couple of hours picking up trash, but I couldn’t resist the chance to get in the water.

I have discovered something much harder than catching fish. Getting those little buggers to sit still long enough for you to film them is a pain. They are totally uncooperative. Sadly, a pair of snook swam down the beach, but I couldn’t get close enough to capture them with the camera. I was bummed, but the underwater stuff came out ok for our first try.

A productive afternoon–more like Summer than Spring!

Life had been conspiring for a long time to keep my buddy and I off a boat at the same time. It had been more than a year since we both had time to hit the flats together.

May 20th, my daughter and son had school things during the day so I took the day off. I wrapped up kid stuff early afternoon and made the call to Doug to see if he was still on for later in the day. Doug says “Dude, I’m ready now!”

Sweet–out the door I went. We hit the water around 2:30 and started catching fish almost immediately. Trout, redfish, jacks and ladyfish for about 5 hours. We didn’t catch any snook, but did see an upper slot fish and one monster snook. We ended the day with about a dozen trout, one red and several other fish.

On a side note, it was hot. Not just the air, but the water too. I haven’t had the temperature sensor on the boat calibrated, but, as you’ll see in the video, we were getting water temps from 86-92 degrees. Even if the sensor is off my a few degree, that is pretty warm for mid-May.

Here is the video from the trip. I had a great time. It was good to bend a rod with one of my best friends.

A Windy Thursday and a Good Friend.

I got an email last week that one of my oldest and closest friends was going to be in town for a couple of days. I can’t tell you how excited I was to hear that–you see I’m a terrible friend. I am possibly the worst on the planet about not picking up a phone, so it had been a long time since we had talked.

Well, Mike said his son is really into fishing and wondered if I had time to go fishing. It just so happens I am on vacation this week. I have nothing but time.

I spent a good amount of time fretting over where we should fish. I decided on Round Island to try and hide from the wind a little. All I can say is–MASSIVE FAIL!! Not only was fishing terrible, but the wind was blowing a steady 20mph maybe gusting higher.

We did learn a couple of things: 1) I suck as a guide, lol. 2) My boat will take more of a beating than I thought. 3) When NWS says “Moderate chop on the Intracoastal” they mean 4′ with chance of death.

We did manage to tuck in out of the wind on a normally reliable shoreline around sunset. We fished about 200 yard and had a couple of half-hearted strikes from probably trout, but we didn’t put a hook in anything. Unless you count MJ hooking Mike in the back of his hat. I had flashbacks of my son hooking me in the head.

I really appreciate the free advertising too!!

I was really disappointed that we didn’t catch anything. I was hoping to find a red or some trout at least. It is a little alarming that in three days fishing this week, we haven’t caught a snook. The areas we fished generally hold snook, but after this winter, they seem to be a little scarce.

I want to thank Mike and MJ for making time to hang out with me. I really enjoyed it and laughed A LOT! Hopefully it won’t be another 10 yrs before we get to hangout again.Next time we get the whole families together.
